La '' Pigna'' which rapresents the fruit of the pine, has the symbolic meaning of a vital force, longevity, power, fertility and eternity; it is a typical sicilian symbol used since ancient times in Sicilian homes.
 
Still today in Sicily you can often find these ceramic pine cones not only on the pillars of the entrance gate, but also as an ornamental for iron beds in the top of the four corners and in Sicilian balconies, as used to be in the nineteenth-century.
